Adderbury Ukulele Group
We practice every Monday at the Adderbury Bowls Club, enjoying the wonderful facilities. We are a friendly group of all ages enjoying strumming and singing popular songs, in a relaxed atmosphere. New players are always made welcome. The group have continued to develop by adding more songs to their repertoire. Many new members have joined following the beginners’ classes at the start of the year, also experienced players have joined after finding out about the group. As well as the regular Monday evening practice at the Bowl’s Club, there was an improvers’ class on a Friday morning at “Let’s Play” in Adderbury. This had to change and the Improvers class has moved to St Hugh’s Church in Banbury on a Thursday morning.
Songs from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s are popular with older age groups. The songs are easy to sing with nice melodies and lyrics, that are suited to the ukulele. Care Homes all around the area regularly book the group, together with Age Concern and other local agencies. With Dementia on the increase, playing these songs to sufferers has an immediate effect, seeing people come to life as they start to sing along with the group.
The Ukes played at “The Red Lion” in Cropredy, as part of Fairport Fringe, for the second year. Having a prime spot on Saturday afternoon, and playing to a packed audience, was greatly enjoyed by the group. They played for free and collected for “Dogs for Good”.
With Autumn upon us, it will not be long before the group start practicing it’s Christmas music ready for the December bookings, including the Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary’s Church.
Want to learn to play? Each year the group run beginner’s classes. A ten-week course will start on Tuesday 7 January 2025. If interested, go to the website to book your place
