Speed Watch

Adderbury Community Speed Watch

We are a group of villagers who believe in reducing traffic noise and nuisance so that all may enjoy the unique character and peaceful atmosphere in Adderbury.
Speeding traffic is a danger to our children, pets, and wildlife, as well as being a source of irritating noise pollution for many living along our main routes. The speed limits are there for a reason, we want to remind everyone to stick to them. You can find out more about the aims and objectives of such via this link.
Community Speed Watch Groups are a national initiative.
It is an education and encouragement initiative.
To find out more about the history of Speed Watch in our area, here is a link to an update given by The Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, in October 2021 The initial Adderbury group was probably one of the pilot schemes referred to there because, with support from Oxfordshire County Council, the Sentinel Camera that we use was purchased by Adderbury Parish Council in 2019.
Our Speed Watch team took a break during the Covid 19 pandemic and picked up again in August 2023 on the introduction of the new 20mph limit for selected main routes through the village. We understand that this new limit takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s worth it when you know a little more about the fatality rates for traffic accidents.
When a vehicle hits a pedestrian (source roadwise.co.uk)

  • at 40 mph there is a 90% chance they will be
  • at 35 mph there is a 50 % chance they will be
  • at 30 mph there is a 20 % chance they will be
  • at 20 mph there is a 5 % chance they will be killed.

With much of the village now a 20pmh zone, we want to encourage drivers not to exceed this limit, so that the roads in Adderbury can be safe for all users: pedestrians, cyclists, dog walkers, horse riders, children walking to school and those visiting the playgrounds.
Those who pass our checkpoints at more than the threshold speed are reported to Thames Valley Police, who then send a strongly worded warning letter. No fines or license points are given because of our activities.
Would you like to join our friendly team? We are looking for new recruits with time to join the regular speed monitoring sessions. It is a voluntary team, flexible to make use of any spare time you may have during the week. We only operate during daylight hours.
Take a look here for more information about becoming a Speed Watch volunteer, and contact us here [email protected] with your contact details should you be interested in joining our group. We look forward to welcoming you to our team!
